The World Council is comprised of 12 members, 9 of which presently live in an Oxford House, 3 who are alumni. In carrying out its mission the Council always keeps a focus on expansion of the network of individual Oxford Houses, to provide all recovering alcoholics and drug addictions the opportunity to develop comfortable sobriety without relapse. Alcoholism and substance abuse affects over 20 million Americans, and thus is the most prevalent mental disorder facing our nation (Jason, Ferrari, Davis, & Olson, 2006).

Living within an Oxford House provides both the opportunity and motivation for all residents to regularly attend AA and/or NA meetings. The example of Oxford House members going to AA or NA meetings on their own is contagious. It has been the experience of Oxford House that participation in AA and NA is extremely high in an environment where one individual can see another individual, with the same disease, reaping great benefits from AA and/or NA participation.

Slowly but surely, members learn or relearn values and responsible behavior. We collected data at the individual, house, and state levels, and at times compared data over these different levels of analysis. We believe that selecting multi-level, multi-methods approaches allowed us to better clarify complex phenomena that we were studying.

Oxfordshire’sFinest

It’s been the family seat since the 1620s and it was turned into the English Palladian home in the 1800s. The estate first opened to the public in 1955 and its impressive art collection includes the largest private collection of Venetian views painted by Canaletto on public view and the Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I. This stately home was built in the Renaissance Revival style of architecture between 1779 and 1783 for Edward Loveden Townsend. Buscot also houses the Farringdon Collection, with paintings by Rembrandt, Reynolds, Rubens and Van Dyck. The house is open at select times from April to September and holds a rare oxford house copy of the Decem Rationes.

It has been suggested that for a substantial portion of addicted persons, detoxification does not lead to sustained recovery. Instead, these individuals cycle repetitively through service delivery systems (Richman & Neuman, 1984; Vaillant, 2003). Recidivism rates within one year following treatment are high for men and women, and 52–75% of all alcoholics drop out during treatment (Montgomery et al., 1993). There is no reason to believe that society as a whole had the responsibility to provide long-term housing within a protected environment for the alcoholic and drug addict.

Set in Oxford, the recently renovated Rasa Sayang House – Self-check-in guesthouse offers accommodation 1.7 km from University of Oxford and 16 km from Blenheim Palace. Situated just off the A40, this picturesque Tudor house offers 4-star accommodation just a 10-minute drive from Oxford city centre. This guest house is situated in Oxford, a 15-minute drive from the city’s rail station.

Oxford Houses are self-run, self-supported homes for individuals in recovery from a Substance Use Disorder.

As a general rule formal AA or NA meetings are not held in an Oxford House member who has maintained comfortable sobriety in an Oxford House makes it a practice to attend a lot of AA and/or NA meetings on a regular basis. Oxford House, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that employs both office and field staff to provide technical assistance to the network of houses to foster the expansion of the Oxford House Model. The Oxford House Model provides community based, supportive, and sober living environment. Oxford House, Inc. is a separate nonprofit organization that employs field staff to provide technical assistance to the network of houses to help expand the Oxford House Model. The most northerly of Scotland’s great houses, overlooking the Moray Firth, is also one of its most spectacular. Home to the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland since the 13th century, it resembles a French château with its whimsical spires and fairytale turrets.

Just an hour from London by train, Oxford offers the perfect balance of connectivity and tranquillity, with the rolling Oxfordshire countryside on its doorstep, providing idyllic village settings and grand country estates. For a couple of months in 1975, he found himself living on the streets and begging strangers for money before he entered a rehabilitation program. He moved to a county-run halfway house in Silver Spring, MD, to recover but soon learned that the facility was about to close. Generally an individual comes into an Oxford House following a 28-day rehabilitation program or at least a 5 to 10 day detoxification program.

Peer-Run, Self-Sustaining, Substance-Free Housing

It is inconsistent with the Oxford House system of democratic rule to have a professional manager of Oxford House. For example, the landlord and phone company may require a security deposit and, while furnishings are generally donated, members will often have to rent a truck in order to pick them up. There may also be a need to buy more “staples” such as flour, sugar, coffee, etc. when a House starts up.
